What are WordPress Blocks?

To make it simple, WordPress blocks are premade draggable elements that are used to create and edit content in blogs and posts, like how I used the paragraph block to write this paragraph right now. The Blocks are already installed in WordPress to make writing posts/blogs easier. It also has media to further boost your SEO. Or columns and grids to design how you want your blog to look. Widgets, Themes, Embeds, and all sorts of things that are for free. The potential of blogs in WordPress is limitless.
WordPress Block Plugins
If you are looking for more blocks to play around with, you can also install WordPress block plugins to add more elements to your site. This can add more unique elements to the block editor. Here is a useful plugin to use https://essential-blocks.com/.
List of Useful WordPress Blocks
Here are some WordPress blocks that are some of the best when it comes to creating blogs. I typically use them in my blogs too because it helps my post look nicer and is time-efficient.
- Images
- Columns
- Video
- Gallery
- Next and Previous Post
Note that, many other blocks are still useful, but aren’t mentioned here.
Image
Image block lets you insert an image into your blog. This is undoubtedly one of the most appealing blocks on WordPress. It will turn your boring blog filled with writing into something more appealing to look at. It is also an awesome block for boosting SEO. It gives you the option to upload the image from your computer, pick one from your media library, or insert a link to add the image. It also has adjustable settings, after adding the image. You can change the sizes by grabbing the sides and changing the alignment in the setting.
Here is an example of image block usage:

Notice how the vibrant color of the image instantly makes this section more appealing. Also, the image block has 2 styles which are default and rounded. You can see the example above this paragraph. This will help the image fit in with the theme of your site.
Columns
Column is a type of design block and it does exactly as its name suggests. It makes columns. It allows you to divide your content into multiple columns, making it easy to organize and display text, images, and other blocks. Columns help create flexible and responsive layouts without needing custom CSS.

It is very simple to use, just drag and drop the column block into the post. Select the number of columns you want it to have. Then you can drop other blocks into the column or click the “+” and add a block.
Here is an example of 2 columns. As you can see right there, you can also use it to make an image side text. It also gives you the freedom to adjust the size of each column. This is neat because you can organize the layout however you like.
Gallery
The Gallery is a type of media block that allows you to display multiple images in a grid. It is used to make visually appealing image galleries, making it easier to display multiple images.

As you can see, the gallery block neatly separates and organizes images by each other. There is no limit to how many images you can add to the gallery, but it is important to note that the more images you put in, the more the quality of the image and the speed of the website will be reduced. There are more options like “add before” or “add after” to decide where you want the image to appear.
Next and Previous Post
They are commonly used in single-post pages to guide the readers into related content. These links are typically displayed at the bottom or top of a post, providing a way for users to easily navigate to the next or previous posts without having to go back to the main blog page. You can see them being used at the bottom of this blog. Try coming back to this blog by clicking next on my previous blog: AI Creating Better Experience For Users in 2024
How the blocks work
The Next and Previous posts are navigation elements in WordPress that can either let you move forward or go back to the previous blog in WordPress. This block is a link back to your previous post. It’s really convenient to travel back and forth between blocks. It solves the annoying problem of going back to the blog page just to click on the next blog.
Video
The name is an easy giveaway of what the block does. The Video Block is a content block that allows you to easily add and embed video files into your posts or pages. It allows you to insert videos from different sources into the blog.
The video block gives you 3 options on how you want to insert the video. Upload from the computer, Insert from the WordPress media library, or Insert using the video’s URL. I suggest using a URL because it is easier and doesn’t take up storage on your computer.
Conclusion

In conclusion, WordPress offers its users many helpful blocks that can help writing blogs easier. Some of these blocks that you should start using are Images, Gallery, Columns, Next and Previous Post, and Video blocks. These blocks help with creating more visually appealing and interesting blocks. They help organize the layout of the post, help with navigation, and fill your blog with rich media. Many others are as useful as them, so make sure to utilize the given blocks to their best.
